Helping you return to the activities that matter
Pain or injury can affect much more than one joint or muscle. It may make it harder to walk, use the stairs, work, exercise, drive, spend time in the garden or care for family members.
Your physiotherapist begins by understanding what you are finding difficult and what you would like to work towards. Assessment and treatment are then connected to these meaningful activities, rather than focusing only on isolated exercises.
Meaningful goals
Treatment is shaped around the activities and outcomes that are important to you.
Assessment in your own environment
A home visit allows us to see how your symptoms affect movement and everyday activities in your home.
Personalised rehabilitation
Your rehabilitation programme is planned around your assessment findings, current abilities and personal goals.
Practical problem-solving
We consider the practical barriers affecting your movement and explore appropriate ways to make activities safer or more manageable.

How physiotherapy may support your recovery
Musculoskeletal physiotherapy can help you understand what may be affecting your movement and work towards the activities that matter to you. Your treatment plan will be shaped around your assessment findings, current abilities and personal goals.
Understanding your symptoms
Exploring your symptoms, general health, activities and the factors that may be contributing to the problem.
Strength & movement
Using an appropriate rehabilitation programme to help improve movement, strength, control and physical capacity.
Pain management
Providing practical advice and movement strategies that may help you manage symptoms and remain appropriately active.
Everyday activities
Practising movements connected to walking, using the stairs, working, exercising, enjoying hobbies and completing other meaningful activities.
Rehabilitation after injury or surgery
Supporting a planned and gradual return to everyday activity following an injury, operation or period of reduced mobility.
Longer-term self-management
Helping you understand how to continue exercising, respond to changes in symptoms and reduce the risk of some problems returning.
Building movement, strength and confidence
Exercise often forms an important part of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, but the type, level and pace of activity should be appropriate for the individual. Your programme will be shaped around your assessment, symptoms, current abilities and the activities you want to work towards.
An appropriate exercise programme may help you:
- Improve strength and physical capacity
- Restore movement and control
- Build confidence using the affected area
- Work towards a gradual return to everyday activity
- Manage some persistent symptoms more effectively
- Reduce the risk of some problems returning
Exercise does not have to mean attending a gym or completing a long routine. Your physiotherapist can select manageable activities that suit your home environment, available equipment and rehabilitation goals. The programme can then be reviewed and adapted as your movement, symptoms and confidence change.
Manual therapy may also be used where it is clinically appropriate. However, it is considered one possible part of treatment rather than a complete solution. The longer-term emphasis remains on movement, rehabilitation and helping you understand how to manage your condition.

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy: FAQs
Do I need a GP referral for private physiotherapy?
No. Private clients can contact Reach Rehab directly without a GP referral. If you intend to use medical insurance, check whether your insurer requires a referral or prior authorisation before arranging treatment.
Do you provide musculoskeletal physiotherapy at home?
What happens during the first physiotherapy assessment?
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
Do I need a scan before seeing a physiotherapist?
Not usually. Many musculoskeletal problems can be assessed without an X-ray, MRI or other scan. Your physiotherapist will consider your symptoms and history and advise if further medical assessment may be appropriate.
For lower back pain and sciatica, NICE advises that imaging should not routinely be offered in a non-specialist setting unless there is concern about a more serious underlying problem. Imaging may be considered in a specialist setting if the result is likely to change treatment.
When should I see a physiotherapist?
Consider contacting a physiotherapist when pain, stiffness, weakness or reduced movement is affecting your everyday activities, work, sleep, exercise or confidence. An assessment may also be helpful if symptoms keep returning, are not improving as expected or you need support following an injury or operation.
Physiotherapy is not an emergency service. Seek urgent medical help when symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening or accompanied by signs of a potentially serious condition.
Can a family member or carer be involved?
Yes, with your consent. A family member or carer may help explain how the problem affects daily life, support agreed exercises or take part in practical discussions where appropriate.
How much does home visit physiotherapy cost?
The cost depends on the type and length of appointment, location and any additional reporting or travel requirements. Contact Reach Rehab with your postcode and the reason for your enquiry, or visit the prices and payment page for current information.
